Why Lincolnville Beach is Great – An Amazing Outpost

Lincolnville Beach, Maine — I have a fantastic view! Every morning I am greeted by the sunrise over Islesboro Island. The warm light shines through my shop window and I sit at my counter with a cup of coffee and simply enjoy the beauty of Penobscot Bay. At high tide the water is only about 100-steps from my door. When I am feeling motivated, I can grab a paddle board or kayak and head out. You only have to get a few hundred yards offshore and then you gain a real appreciation for the area. The hills rise above the beach and it is such a beautiful spot! For a water sports nut - I live in paradise! The ease of access to the world class paddling and sailing first attracted me to Lincolnville Beach, but this little beachside community has more to offer than just adventure sports. It is a unique little outpost that packs a lot into a small area and it has much to offer just about anybody.

I often get asked why I chose Lincolnville Beach as a basecamp for Thorfinn Expeditions. To me it is pretty obvious. I can just point out my window. I am an outposty type guy and I have a real appreciation for authentic spots that are surrounded by natural beauty. There is a reason that people park here and simply walk the beaches. I often see folks standing at the shoreline during sun or moon rise. They look out at Penobscot Bay and usually they have the place to themselves this time of year. The beaches are unique to this part of the coast and they offer a place to reflect, play, and to simply take a break from everyday life.

Being athletes, my business partner Chris and I thrive here. We can paddle, sail, run and bike right from our doorstep but we also like to eat and Lincolnville Beach has great food. Many mornings and at lunch time I find myself heading up to DOTS.  I love their breakfast burritos and I have a favorite sandwich. It is a great place to grab a cup of coffee and read the paper. My boys and I are also huge fans of The Whales Tooth Pub. Being a single dad with two energetic young boys, I really appreciate the friendly/helpful staff. We always split the fish and chips (huge portions!). I am looking forward to next summer when I can head over to “The Tooth” and sit on their deck to enjoy an Andrews with clients - post paddle or sail. Lincolnville Beach is also home to two tasty lobster pounds, Chez Michel, and The Beachstore has great pizza (the boys and I do pizza one night a week too – single Dad cooking…). Green Tree Coffee and Tea, importers and roasters of fine coffees and teas, is right across from DOTs in a cool rustic cabin. Living here it is easy to be well fed and caffeinated.

The shops here are all individualistic and offer a big range of items from housewares to paddle gear. We are obviously not Freeport, thankfully, but the shops at the beach have a unique charm that matches the scenery. Each business in Lincolnville is part of the whole. The business owners are passionate about the area and proud of our little spot by the bay.

On the Water

I first came to beach to play with my boys. While they tore around in the sand I would stare out at the water. The ferry goes back and forth to Islesboro Island and I would visually track it. From a paddler and sailors perspective the area really is perfect. You have a big exposed bay that offers beautiful island touring with access (Warren Island State Park), exciting paddling and sailing, and endless opportunities for adventure. Our sailboat can cover a lot of ground and the route to and from Acadia passes though a vast wonderland of islands, bays, and communities. On our shoreline, the Camden Hills provide elevation and a dramatic backdrop. I love paddling between Rockport, Camden, and Lincolnville. Often it is downwind in one direction and on a fast SUP board or kayak you can surf the wind waves the whole way when the conditions are right. I am excited about pushing paddle sports programs out of Lincolnville Beach. We can run more mellow tours to the Ducktrap River and the ability to offer more challenging routes (distance and exposure) are equally readily available, and they are only a few steps and a launch away from our doors.

We left Lincolnville Beach for a season in order to focus on just running our outdoor programs but it is really good to be back. I am constantly reminded of that every time I hit the water, grab a bite to eat, or witness a sun or moonrise. Lincolnville Beach is a special outpost nestled between the mountains and the ocean.
