Free Admission For Veterans at Owls Head

The Owls Head Transportation Museum’s 1917 Nieuport 28C.1 (left) and 1917 Spad XIIIc.I are two of several World War I-era aircraft that are currently on display. The museum has announced free admission for all U.S. veterans on Veteran's Day, Friday, November 11.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum will offer free admission to all veterans as well as active members of the U.S. armed services, Friday, November 11, in recognition of Veteran’s Day. Admission for adult non-veterans is $10.00. Children under 18 are admitted free.  Museum hours are from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Veteran’s Day was originally called Armistice Day in recognition of the end of World War I — “the war to end all wars” — on November 11, 1918. Many of the Museum’s aircraft on display—including a 1918 Standard J-1, 1917 Nieuport, and 1917 SPAD—were developed for use during World War I. The Museum’s 1941 Stearman was the plane of choice to train American pilots during the Second World War.

Two short videos will also be running throughout the day. Going Hollywood: The War Years is a compilation of vintage feature-film clips, original wartime documentary footage and interviews with several prominent stars of the era. Combat America also features original footage of the U.S.Army Air Corp, showing the pilots, planes and the missions they flew. It was produced and narrated by Hollywood actor, and major in the U.S. Air Corp, Clark Gable.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum is located at 117 Museum Street, (off Route 73) in Owls Head, approximately two miles south of Rockland, Maine. Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm. For more information call 207-594-4418, or visit the Museum online at www.owlshead.org.
