Polar Air Mail Express & Free Family Holiday Concert at Owls Head

The Owls Head Transportation Museum will host a open house Sunday, December 4, that will feature Santa Claus arriving by airplane and a demonstration of the Polar Air Mail Express. A family holiday concert performed by the Mid-Coast Community Band will conclude the day’s activities. Admission is free.

Join us on Sunday, December 4, for the Owls Head Transportation Museum's annual family holiday concert featuring the Mid-Coast Community Band.  As part of the festivities, children (of any age) are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa and see how —via the Polar Air Mail Express—their letters are delivered to the North Pole. Admission is free.

The fun starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday as children will create their own holiday ornaments, some made from candy.  At 12:30, everyone will step outside to watch Santa’s arrival from the North Pole in one of the Museum’s planes.  Upon landing, he will meet with children in the Museum’s auditorium and reads a favorite Christmas story.

Children are encouraged to bring their letters for Santa to the Museum. With assistance from one of Santa’s helpers (Museum pilot Karl Erickson), children will see with their own eyes how their letters actually reach Santa at the North Pole.  All letters will be placed in a special “Polar Air Mail Express” mailbag, then literally scooped up (by plane) to be delivered directly to the North Pole. This demonstration will take place outside on Runway 17, weather permitting.

Once the letters are safely on their way, Santa will lead the children back inside and introduce the Mid-Coast Community Band as they hold their annual holiday concert from 1:30 to 3:00 pm.

Museum admission is free all day. The Museum Store—featuring a storewide 20% off sale—will be open for convenient holiday shopping.  Light refreshments will be served, and ample parking is available.

Following the concert, the public is invited to attend an open house and tree lighting activities at the Owls Head General Store. There will be caroling and horse-drawn carriage. Refreshments will be served.
