Montessori Students Raise Money for the "Wells of Love" Project
The struggles of the people of the Azawak deeply moved student Odin Scappaticci, of Cornerspring Montessori School. With the help of his teacher Cindy, Odin made a presentation to his classmates bringing a tray with 18 glasses of clear water to his circle of classmates. Everyone drank a glass of water while Odin shared the struggles that the people of the Azawak endure by reading aloud the book Amman Imman - A Story . This story shared how these beautiful people are living without the dignity of having water to drink. Odin then filled the glasses again, but this time with muddy, blackish water. The children understood, no one wanted to drink that water. When Odin asked his friends at Cornerspring if they wanted to join him in helping bring water to the Azawak, each child signed their name to his poster that declared: Yes, we will help you with your water project! Deeply moved by the presentation, student Nathaniel Johnson went home thinking of ways to help and decided to start a fundraising effort in support of Odin’s passion by donating his bank filled about half way with coins he had been saving. He made a sign asking students and families to join him in filling the crayon with spare change. Last week Odin and Nathaniel took the coin filled crayon to the bank and placed the coins in the counter. They were pleased with the $53.89 raised for the "Wells of Love" project.
Wells of Love is the service learning program of Amman Imman: Water is Life. Its mission is to empower students as Heroes of Compassion - future leaders with a caring, philanthropic spirit - by engaging them to help bring water and hope to the 500,000 people of the Azawak of West Africa.
This was Cornerspring's second fundraising event for this project in support of student Odin Scappaticci's passion. The school will continue to support this project throughout the year with different fundraisers.
