Public hearing/school news

An informational meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Frankfort Elementary School. This meeting is regarding withdrawal from Regional School Unit 20.

A town referendum election is set for Thursday, March 8, at the Frankfort Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The referendum has two questions:

• Whether you are in favor of leaving RSU 20; and

• Whether you are in favor of joining School Administrative District 22 (Hampden/Winterport/Newburgh).

Absentee ballots are available at the town office. Voters must be registered to vote in the town of Frankfort.

School vacation will be coming upon us soon, scheduled for the week of Feb. 20-24.

4-H Club news

The Fur, Feathers, and 4-H Club is collecting empty ink cartridges, and there is a drop-off box at the Waldo Peirce Reading Room. The Fur, Feathers, and 4-H Club holds their meetings at the Waldo Peirce Reading Room every second Saturday of the month. For more information, contact Angela at 323-8934 or John at 323-8935.

The famous shadow

The famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Feb. 2, which by legend predicts six more weeks of winter. However, many robins are giving pause to this prediction of winter, as these birds of spring have been spotted in Frankfort for the last few weeks.

At first upon seeing a flock of them searching for food under a nearby apple tree, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, possibly searching optimistically through a bird for an early return of warm weather, although I have to admit, we’ve been pretty lucky with a mild winter so far.

It finally settled upon me that I was actually seeing robins, real live robins, here in Maine, in January! Only time will tell how many weeks of the winter season we actually experience, but I’m putting my money on the robins.
