By Rita Doughty | Feb 10, 2012

 Town Meeting:

The Knox Town meeting will be March 17th 10 AM.  Voting takes place March 16th 3:45PM – 8 PM.

Taking nomination papers out for 2nd  Selectman is Basil Wentworth.  Philip Shibles is a candidate for the position on the school board.

Visiting:

Gabriel Doughty came and spent the weekend with his Grammie Rita.  I was sick Friday so he was taking care of me.  Guess I picked up a “viral bug” out there.  We need snow to cover the ground, as Grammie Stewart used to say, if the ground gets covered there’s not as much sickness.  I believe she was right.

Get Well:

Here’s wishing our cousin, Mary Jean Thompson (Smith) a great recovery.  She’s at Tall Pines in rehab in Belfast.  Get better soon.

Congratulations:

Congratulations to the Little Beavers 4-H kids that attended the Big E and came home with all kinds of awards.  They work real hard, and it showed with the awards they got and the waterers they made.  Good for you and thanks to the Leaders that take a lot of time to help the children.  4-H is a great program.

Free Lunch and Breakfast:

At the Unity Community Center- the Open Door Lunch Program and Breakfast sponsored by the Quaker Hill Church will be February 20th – 24th.  Come join in.

Happy Birthday:

Happy Birthday February 19th to Linwood Doughty Jr., February 20th to Sara Doughty who will be 11 yr.’s old and Ashley Poulin on February 23rd.  Also Neighbor “Buzzy” Perkins has a birthday on February 19th.  Ruben Schofield Jr. will be celebrating on February 26th.   Hope all of you have many more.

Mid Winter Conference correction:

Should have said- Chaplain Gary Bulger Dept. Of Maine American Legion Post #14 Fairfield had lunch with us Saturday.

Icy Pond:

I wonder how thick the ice is on the ponds around here.  I saw a pickup on Sanborn Pond and people dishing, down in back of Art Green’s camp and wondered how thick the ice actually was.  Where are Matt Curry and all his good sports stories we used to read and enjoy? And Steve’s geo caching column news I enjoyed.  Steve you can e-mail articles to me anytime.

Where’s the Snow:

The snowmobilers have been really discouraged with little to no snow here.  I see some have their sleds for sale.  Maybe we’ll get more soon.

Brooks – Music Club Group:

Kermyt from Brooks, the Music club the guys started are looking for musical instruments.  Even if broken they can repair them, give him a call at 722-6022.

Super Bowl:

The Super Bowl is over, and did your team win?  I don’t really watch football, but my bet was on the Patriots.  A disappointing loss for New England.

Visiting:

I took a ride to Benton to see Rodney DuPerry and Lori’s daughter and grandson from Mass.  They were headed to Lakewood Manor in Waterville to see Lorelie Bertulli, Rod’s companion ‘who’s very sick’ and their Mom and Grandmother.  She’s in Rm. 73

Jeremy’s Benefit Supper – Belfast:

A supper for injured Iraq Veteran Jeremy Gilley of Palermo will be held Saturday, Feb. 25th 5-7 PM at Belfast Legion Post #43, Church St, Belfast.  Contact Jackie Martin 505-1131 – e-mail: jmartin39@gmail.com.  Donations accepted.

Little Beavers 4-H:

The Little Beavers have a gallery display at the Maine Farmland Trust building on Main St, Belfast.  Stop in and check them out.

Thorndike:

While passing by on Rte. 139 (Brooks Rd) in Thorndike I noticed the old Raven homestead was torn down and burned.  All that is left is the big old barn.

Also-

Hopefully people are helping to donate to the Thorndike Congregational Church to rebuild since the fire there.  All is gone but the foundation.

Until next time:

As I write this snow is forecast for Saturday, then brutal cold and wind coming next.

If you want any news in my column please email or call me.  Folks are enjoying our Knox Historical Society calendars.  This month the picture is of our old “Drew” farm house for February.  Mom and Dad would be proud the old place got on the calendar as a lot of us grew up there.  Starting with my grandfather Basil Drew and step grandmother Lizzie (Bradford) Drew and the Drew boys and girls, then Dad, Roger and Evelyn Drew took over, raised broiler chickens and us five siblings were there for years.  Dad sold out in 1973.  We also had others live with us over the years, Ronnie, Normie, Gramp Drew, Gram Stewart, and others.  Lots of good memories.

Have a good week.  “Hello” snowbirds.
