News from Stockton Springs

By Sharon Catus | Feb 04, 2012

From the desk of Lee Synder, Adjutant, Post 157:

A sense of pride showed itself  throughout Stockton Springs and Sandy Point in May 2008 when the Jerry W. Dobbins Post 157 of the American Legion and the Town of Stockton Springs joined forces to have 48 American flags procured and mounted throughout the town.  Displayed annually between Memorial Day and Veterans Day for the past 3 years, those flags have endured some very harsh weather conditions and in short, it’s time to retire 30 of the original 48.

Jerry W. Dobbins Post 157 would once again like to spearhead the flag replacement and is donating the first $100 to the cause.  We invite residents to also participate by making donations at the Town Hall.  Donations may also be made in the name of a loved one and we will publish a list of all such remembrances on Memorial Day 2012.  The cost for a remembrance flag is $15.00.  We will need to collect an additional $320 for the project to succeed.  It will be nice to see ‘Old Glory’ flying on Main Street, in Sandy Point and down at the Harbor again this Spring.

The 30 flags being replaced (along with many other flags dropped off by residents) will be retired at a flag burning ceremony at the Legion during the month of February.  If anyone has a flag that should be retired, you are invited to drop it off at the Legion Hall at 5 Sandy Point Rd between 9 am and noon on Saturday, February 11th.

Schleppinghurst Creator to Speak at Horticulture Program in Stockton Springs

Ken Cleaves at Schleppinghurst

Cleaves

Ken Cleaves loves rocks, and on March 25th at 2:00 PM he will speak at the Stockton Springs Community Library about how he spent 30 years transforming the Heal Black Granite Quarry in Lincolnville into a summer garden, Schleppinghurst, which he created alone and without using any power tools. Cleaves will give a tour around Schleppinghurst with a half-hour DVD that was made for television. The free program is sponsored by the Stockton Springs Community library and open to the public. In 2008 Cleaves received the Kathryn S. Taylor Award, given once a year to honor a garden in the Northeast.
