Monday night, August 27th, the Belfast Creative Coalition (BCC) hosted over 100 artists and entrepreneurs in Belfast to hear practical advice of noted author and artist Jackie Battenfield. Providing instruction from her book, The Artist’s Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love, Battenfield led the full auditorium of the UMaine Hutchinson Center through the essential steps to converting passions into vocations. As one participant put it, “While we artists instinctively know what we are supposed to be doing to be successful, Jackie laid it out in simple enough terms that made it seem doable. When there are so many things you have to do, it’s hard to know where to start and then how to proceed.”
Battenfield emphasized that everything in a creative’s business has to be focused on the goals that they want to achieve through their work, whether it’s to sustain a living, promote a particular agenda, provide supplemental revenue or a mechanism for regular studio work. An artist’s business goals have to be very specific so that everything from the work itself to the website, from marketing materials to networking activities is organized to accomplish these personal goals. With specificity and discipline, the path to success, however defined, begins to open up.
The event organized by the Belfast Creative Coalition, also included a networking reception and a book signing with the author. The mission to the BCC is to establish a forum bringing together artists, entrepreneurs and other creatives. Its website www.belfastcreativecoaltion.org provides an interactive calendar of events and venue for creatives and other businesses to upload their offerings. Funded by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, the Coalition comprises the City of Belfast, Waterfall Arts, the UMaine Hutchinson Center and Our Town Belfast, as well as individual artists and businesses.
The next Artist Networking Night will be October 5th at Light in the Forest Photography in Belfast on Church Street. Please contact the Belfast Creative Coalition if you would like to volunteer at this event.
