95-year-old shows giving is ageless
For inspiration in this season, or for a reminder of the acts of kindness that make our corner of the world a better place, many look to Waldo County’s People For People, a charity group of caring citizens that brings holiday cheer to the elderly and low-income families. But, People For People’s chairperson Paul Garelli says we should really look to 95-year-old Coral Furrow.
One recent afternoon, Garelli visited Coral in Knox, but was stunned to find himself outdone in generosity. Coral, who was awarded the Boston Post Cane last year, surprised Garelli with 60-plus pairs of mittens she had knitted herself over the course of the past year for Waldo County children in need. If the scope of her work wasn’t already remarkable, each pair was knitted with different colors, so, in Coral’s words “children won’t pick up another child’s mittens by mistake.”
“I’m amazed. I’m astounded when I come across acts of pure kindness, care, and concern from individuals perhaps the least likely to be in a position of giving.” Garelli said. “It’s the action of wonderful people like Coral who teach and inspire individuals like me to continue to enlist my time, energy, and resources for the uplifting and betterment of my fellow community members.”
People For People will honor Coral’s donation by giving the mittens to Waldo County Head Start and other local charities and educational programs.
People For People is now in its 29th year providing Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to Waldo County residents in need. The organization was founded by Garelli after being inspired by a woman he met who, even with her own limited resources, was wrapping gifts for four other families to bring them holiday cheer.
Last year People For People provided 760 Thanksgiving dinners and 1,162 Christmas dinners to Waldo County households. Garelli expects them to surpass those numbers this year as People For People faces its highest demand for services ever.
