Additional ‘Spitfire Grill’ auditions March 23

Mar 12, 2013

Northport — Northport Music Theater will hold auditions for its summer main stage production “The Spitfire Grill” Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the theater, 851 Atlantic Highway/Route 1. The production is directed by Tobin Malone with music direction by John Gelsinger.

“The Spitfire Grill” by James Valcq (music and book) and Fred Alley (lyrics and book) is based on the award-winning film by Lee David Zlotoff and is a full length, musical drama that has become one of the most often-produced new American musicals. It tells the tale of a feisty parolee who follows her dreams, selected from an old travel book page, to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at the only eatery in the depressed town. Soon, things start cookin' at the Spitfire Grill.

Strong amateur/professional singers needed for two roles: Effy Krayneck, a female mezzo/alto in her 50s who carries close harmony; and Caleb Thorpe, a male in his early 40s with a folk/rock voice with an edge. Musicians are needed on violin, cello, accordion and guitar/mandolin. Music rehearsals will initially be held once a week starting in May.

Production team positions to be filled are stage manager, costume designer, light designer and set designer. Volunteers also are needed including set builders, set painters, a props master and costume assistant. Previous experience is a must.

Those unable to attend but would like to participate or have any other questions are asked to call 338-8383 or send email to ruthgelsinger@gmail.com or at tobinmalone@gmail.com. Performance dates are July 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28.

Northport Music theater is a small, intimate summer musical theater that produces contemporary American musical theater and provides summer camps for local students. It received non-profit status in September 2012. The theater seats 128 people, has general admission seating only, is air-conditioned and handicapped accessible.
