Belfast — A Belfast man spent Christmas night in jail after a combination of alcohol and rough housing drew police to a Smart Road residence late in the evening Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Jason Ellsworth, 32, of Belfast, was arrested on charges of domestic violence aggravated assault, violating conditions of release and sale and use of drug paraphernalia after Belfast officers responded to a disturbance at a residence on Smart Road at 11:30 p.m.

Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said Ellsworth and a male relative had been drinking throughout the evening and the two began rough housing with one another.

"They were just fooling around, wrestling," said Cunningham. "And then things got out of hand."

What began as good-natured grappling soon turned ugly as Ellsworth and his relative grew irritated with one another. Cunningham said Ellsworth reportedly choked the other man, and the other man later told police he was worried that Ellsworth might kill him.
