Belfast — Friends, relatives and students of Roger Sprague are invited to join in the celebration of his 83rd birthday at a potluck gathering slated for Monday July 2 at 5 p.m.

Gloria Young of Searsport, who is one of Sprague's many local voice students, said the party is being planned to celebrate Sprague's birthday, his life, and his flair for sharing his love of music with anyone who wishes to learn.

"He teaches you how to use your voice," said Young.

Young said she was inspired to contact Sprague after seeing a performance of the Midcoast Community Chorus, a singing group based in Rockport.

"I like music, but I'd never been able to express it," said Young.

Young said she voiced those thoughts to a woman who was sitting next to her during the performance, and the woman suggested she contact Sprague to obtain voice lessons. Young took that advice, and said she's been hooked on singing ever since.

"He welcomes people," said Young. "He teaches you how to use your voice."

Sprague's birthday party will take place at 1 Hassell Drive in Belfast Monday, July 2 at 5 p.m. Young said all are welcome to attend, and are invited to bring a dish to share with guests.
