'All That We Have' at Betts

Karen MacDonald's recent mixed media work embraces coming to terms with mortality.

Belfast — Betts Gallery in The Belfast Framer, 96 Main St., will open “All That We Have,” an exhibit of new work by Karen MacDonald, with a 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday art walk reception Aug. 3. the show will run through Sept. 1.

In the past few years, the artist has seen many friends and family face illness and death. This work, a project in mixed media that includes an installation in the gallery’s front window, is an immediate response to the different ways of living and dying. MacDonald said it has been accompanied by a fair amount of existential reflection and contemplation of loss, acceptance and "making something with what you’ve got.”

MacDonald grew up on Mount Desert Island.  She was introduced to the letterpress and worked as a letterpress compositor and printer in high school and continued throughout her college years. She studied art at Wesleyan University and her creative pursuits included graphic design, printmaking, new product design and photography. Currently her work encompasses collage, assemblage and installation.

Betts Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 338-6465 or visit thebelfastframer.com.
