Alleged drunken joyride comes crashing to an end
Belfast — A man who was reportedly at the wheel of a friend's car was arrested on several charges after driving the vehicle into a stone wall during what police described as an evening of drinking Sunday night, Sept. 2.
Police arrested Joshua A. Colby, 26, of Waterville on charges of operating under the influence, driving to endanger with personal injury and failure to stop at a stop sign after an incident that police say occurred just before 9:30 p.m.
Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said Colby and two friends were driving a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic registered to the wife of one of his passengers when the three apparently decided to buy some alcohol.
Cunningham said after the trio purchased grape flavored Smirnoff Ice they opted to drink the beverages while continuing their ride around town.
When their journey brought them to the end of Tufts Road, Cunningham said, Colby allegedly failed to keep the vehicle on the road.
"At the end of the Tufts Road, you're supposed to turn either left or right," said Cunningham. "He didn't do either."
Instead, Cunningham said Colby continued straight past the stop sign, drove off the road, into the woods and crashed head-on into a stone wall.
While the vehicle was heavily damaged in the accident, Colby and his two friends were not seriously injured. Belfast Ambulance and Rescue responded to examine the trio at the scene, Cunningham said.
Colby is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Nov. 20.
