Americana sister act plays Flying Shoes

Ari & Mia

Belfast — Belfast Flying Shoes will host Boston-based Ari & Mia with Bethany Waickman Friday, Sept. 5; Chrissy Fowler will call for the evening of contra dancing at American Legion Post No. 43, 143 Church St.

Americana sister act Ari & Mia references the traditions of Southern and Northeastern fiddle music and the early American songbook to create a realm where their own compositions cross paths with older traditions. The duo’s stylish and sophisticated music honors the sounds of Appalachian cottages, rural dance floors and urban concert halls. Combined with an innovative approach to song and tune writing, the result is a fresh and contemporary sound.

Both sisters studied at Boston's New England Conservatory in its cutting edge Contemporary Improvisation department. Waickman grew up in a musical family in northern New York and started playing the piano at an early age. One of her earliest experiences with traditional music was attending Maine’s Meadowlark music camp with her family. It was there she was inspired to take up the guitar. Waickman formed the contra dance trio Anadama while working at Pinewoods in 2007, and it has gone on to delight dancers across the eastern seaboard.

Belfast’s own Fowler will call the dances with her usual cheerfulness and spot-on expertise. The evening will begin 6:30 p.m. with a community dance led by Fowler with music by the All-Comers Band, led by Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in. The contra dance will run from 8 to about 11 p.m.

Admission for the community dance is $2 for adults and $1 for children. For the contra, the price is $10 for those older than 20; $7 age 13 to 20, as well as adult All-Comers; and $4 for children. As always, there is a dollar discount for every box fan brought in for the windows. For more information, call Fowler at 338-0979 or visit belfastflyingshoes.org.
