Amity returns under new ownership
The historic Friendship Sloop Amity returns under new ownership this summer. Brother and sister team Meg and Patrick Reilly are pleased to announce that Amity will continue to offer sailing excursions and private charters in Belfast Harbor and Penobscot Bay.
The Reillys grew up sailing the Maine coast with their family. Patrick is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and has sailed extensively all over the world. He has captained a variety of boats from traditional Maine schooners to luxury yachts. In the winter months, Patrick charters his 48-foot steel expedition vessel Maggie. Last winter he sailed in Central and South America spending time with the Kuna Indians in the San Blas Islands. Amity is a traditional wooden boat called a Friendship Sloop. Boats like Amity were built all along the coast of Maine and were used primarily for lobster fishing. She was built in 1901 by Wilbur Morse in Friendship, Maine and is one of only a handful of original Friendship Sloops still in service today. Amity has had only a few owners in her life. Her most notable owner was J. Russell Wiggins, United States ambassador to the United Nations under Lyndon Johnson and former editor of the Washington Post and Ellsworth American. Wiggins cared for Amity for over 50 years. Thanks to an extensive rebuild by Ralph Stanley in 1974-75 in Southwest Harbor, Maine, Amity is still sailing today. The Amity experience is truly a step back in time.
In addition to Amity, Belfast Bay Company also offers private charters aboard the sailing sloop Trillium. Day sails to Castine, Searsport or Bayside are an intriguing way to visit Penobscot Bay and enter surrounding towns from vantage points not usually seen.
Reservations can be made by calling (207) 323-1443 or at the Belfast Bay Company ticket office and gift shop at 17 Main Street in Belfast. For more information visit their website at www.belfastbaycompany.com.
