As always, 'Celebration On Ice' is cool holiday performance

Young skaters show off plenty of show-stopping artistic, athletic skill

Rockport — The Skating Association of Maine's annual "Celebration On Ice" and skate with Santa event at the Midcoast Recreation Central brings the joy, spirit and music of the holiday season and puts it on ice.

And, as always, the Saturday night, Dec. 8 show was another very cool performance.

The one-hour exhibition featured the talents of many local figure skaters performing to holiday music.

The basic skills groups skated to classics like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Jingle Bells,” and “We Need A Little Christmas.” Talented duets and trios performed to “Jingle Bell Rocking” and “Extraordinary Merry Christmas," among other music.

The four featured soloists were Priscilla Partridge, Kimberly Roman, Elena Laustsen and McKenzie Abendroth, an accomplished competitive skater, as well as an emergency room physician.

Partridge, 9, is a student at Belgrade Central School and also enjoys dance, student council and Green Fusion. She started skating at age 2 1/2. Roman is a seventh grader at Rockland District Middle School. She also enjoys field hockey and softball. Laustsen is a sophomore at Oceanside High School. She has made two films with Julia's Gallery with a group of young artists at the Farnsworth Museum. She also plays violin, is an avid photographer and enjoy competitive sailing. Laustsen has skated since age 4.

Santa took the ice for a performance and skated with the audience after the show.

The exhibition included the following skating performances:

"Nutcracker" melody — Cast of Theater On Ice, which includes Delia Saastamoinen, Roman, Shannon Long, Madelaine Martens, Lexi Tinch, Gail Curtis, Greta Curtis and Partridge.

"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" — Snowplow Sam skaters.

"Jingle Bell Rock" — Jeanna Taylor and Tinch.

"Have A Merry Christmas" — Basic Skills 1 and 2 skaters.

"The Most Wonderful Day Of the Year" — Partridge.

"Christmas" — Brynn Kooyenga and Ashley Pezanowski.

"Jingle Bells" — Basic Skills 3 and 4 skaters.

"Let It snow" — Roman.

"Extraordinary Merry Christmas" — Willow Grinnell, Olivia Hupper and Lily McVetty.

"Once Upon A December" — Laustsen.

"We Need A Little Christmas" — Basic Skills 5 through 8 skaters.

"Last Christmas" — Introduction to Freestyle Skaters, including Gail Curtis, Tinch, Martens, Debbie O'Leary, Taylor and Greta Curtis.

"Cold December Night" — Hayley Downs, Brooke Hammond and Juliana Haynes.

"Where Are You Christmas" — Abendroth.

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" — Santa and Melissa Emerson.

"Deck The Rooftop" — Cast.

The Skating Association of Maine director is Tanya Quigley, who has skated since age 6 and was a competitive skater achieving the USFS silver medal in freestyle and a skater with the Ice Capades. Among the association's local coaches are Nancy Graham and Melissa Emerson.

The spring show will be "Copacabana."
