Athenahealth raises more than $62,000 for Lung Association’s Trek Across MaineFunds Raised Support Fight Against Lung Disease
Augusta — The American Lung Association of the Northeast recognized athenahealth, a leading provider of cloud-based practice management and clinical services for physician practices, for raising more than $62,000 to support healthy lungs and healthy air at this year’s annual Trek Across Maine.
Athenahealth is a corporate sponsor of the annual cycling event, which takes riders on a challenging yet picturesque journey from Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry to Steamboat Landing Park in Belfast. All funds raised support the Lung Association’s efforts to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
This year more than 2,500 cyclists registered for the event, and more than half of all riders participated on one of the 135 corporate, community, or friends and family teams. athenahealth’s corporate team, 104 members strong, raised $62,000, making them the second-highest fundraising team overall.
For the last three years, athenahealth’s participation has been coordinated by Donna Berry. Berry says that about 50 percent of the team travels from their corporate headquarters in Watertown, Mass., to take part in the event, with the remainder of the team coming from their Belfast, Maine office.
Berry partially credits their success to the many recruitment activities the company hosts throughout the year, both to get employees interested in the Trek and keep it fresh in their minds. A group of team members in the Belfast site organize “Trekfast” where people donate to the Trek and get a free breakfast every other Friday.
“We work at a fast pace, driven by a passion to do well only by doing good, and our employees are very into healthy living and care about healthy air,” says Berry. “Supporting organizations like the Lung Association that promote improved public health perfectly fits in with our corporate philosophy.”
Berry says athenahealth team members are a competitive bunch, which helps them be naturally good at both fundraising and recruitment. And, while the Trek Across Maine isn’t a race, employees find other ways to compete. Because of the size of their team and the dollars they raise, athenahealth qualifies for a place at “Team Tent City,” where top teams set up tents on the Colby College campus quad and can have their own place to relax and hang out after the second day of the Trek. It was there that a corporate bag toss game was going on, other competitive tournaments were being planned for later in the afternoon, and team co-captain Craig Surette, could be heard giving an inspiring speech to team members.
On day three of the Trek Across Maine, athenahealth’s corporate spirit continued to shine. With their offices located in Belfast just one mile away from the finish line at Steamboat Landing Park, they again sponsored the popular last mile stop — a place for all teams to meet up so they can cross the finish line together.
“There’s something about a team crossing the finish line together that adds to the excitement and energy of the event,” says Berry. “This is the second year we sponsored the last mile stop, and both years it’s been a great experience.”
“The Lung Association thanks athenahealth for their incredible support of the Trek Across Maine,” said Jeff Seyler, President and CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Not only has their generous financial support helped us further our important mission, their presence at the Trek and the welcoming reception they give all the other teams of cyclists at the last mile stop helps make this event both fun and memorable.”
In its 28th year, the Trek has become a staple in Maine, with the number of cyclists and volunteers growing each year. The event is on target to raise $1.8 million, making it the largest fundraising event for the American Lung Association nationwide.
