Babe Ruth tourney squads named, events begin July 13

By Staff | Jul 09, 2012

With the Midcoast Babe Ruth League baseball season completed, the league's top players will be divided, by age, to represent the area in the sectional and state tournaments — including a handful of games being played locally.

Midcoast will have 13-, 14- and 15-year-old players from different league squads join forces to play for the right to eventually call themselves state champions.

Players from the Midcoast Babe Ruth League's nine teams — Camden-Rockport, Rockport Automotive, Penobscot Bay Dentistry of Belfast, Rockland Café, Waldoboro, Damariscotta Lions, Wiscasset, Georges Valley and Bristol — were considered for the tournament teams.

The tournaments will be played Friday through Sunday, July 13-15 at different venues.

While the Midcoast's 13- and 15-year-old squads will play in a pair of four-team preliminary-round tournaments for the right to move on to the state tournaments, the Midcoast's 14-year-old squad earns an automatic berth to the state tournament due to the lack of players and squads.

The 13-year-old tournament will begin with a four-team prelim-round playoff, which begins at Winslow High School. Midcoast's first game will be on Saturday, July 14 at 10 a.m. against Central Maine. If Midcoast finishes either first or second in the prelim round, the team will advance to the state tournament, which begins on Wednesday, July 18 in Harrison.

There are four prelim-round tourneys taking place around the state, with the top two teams from each tourney earning a berth in the state tournament.

The 14-year-old state tournament will begin with the first six games played in Thomaston on the Oceanside High School field, beginning on Friday, July 13. Midcoast's first game will be on Friday, July 13 at 5 p.m. against Apple Valley. After the first six games, the tournament will shift to Lawrence High School in Fairfield.

The 15-year-old state tournament will begin with a four-team prelim-round playoff, which begins at the Marge Jones Recreational Facility in Rockport. Midcoast's first game will be on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. against Portland. If Midcoast finishes first or second in the preliminary round, the team will advance to the state tournament, which begins on Saturday, July 21 in Portland.

There are four prelim rounds across the state in the 15s tourney, with the top two teams from each round earning a berth in the state tournament.
