BAHS top Class B school at prestigious Spartan tourney
Senior Brent Waterman wins 132-pound division, receives distinctionsSanford — Call the high school wrestling tournament what you want, but it undoubtedly will be one that Belfast senior Brent Waterman will not soon forget.
Waterman, who won conference, regional and state titles last year as well as nabbing the New England championship, won the 138-pound weight class at the annual Spartan Wrestling Tournament with ease, winning three of his four matches by pin, including pinning Timberlane's Josh Burnham in the finals in 0:59.
The tournament, formerly known as the Redskin Invitational Tournament, was Jan. 4-5 at Sanford High School.
The tournament was renamed this year when Sanford High School officially changed its school mascot from the Redskins to the Spartans.
The Lions finished eighth with 74 points, the top team in Class B at the tourney, one slot above defending state Class B champion Camden Hills.
Thirteen Lions competed in the event.
Waterman pinned his three opponents in a combined two minutes and 23 seconds, while he also received the distinction as the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
"He had quite a day for himself and deservedly so," said Belfast coach Rick Kelley of Waterman, who, despite his past successes on the mat, has never won his weight class at the tournament. "That tournament, for whatever reason, has eluded him over the years and it's a nice ending to the story for him."
Peter Kelley finished fourth in the 220-pound weight class, while Wyatt Roberts (195) finished fifth and Dagan Bereyni (132) sixth for the Lions.
Coach Kelley said he was "quite happy" with the way things turned out and "things are moving in the right direction."
"The coaching staff and I are extremely proud of the way the Belfast team conducted itself," he said. "We wrestled hard, we hung in there and, even in defeat, we showed mental toughness."
