Belfast — Vernon Baker, author of “Slow Boat to Purgatory,” will launch his latest book, “The Arimathean,” with a festive party Saturday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Papa J’s & the Lobster Bar, 191 Searsport Ave./Route 1. Both books will be available for purchase, and Baker will be signing books all evening. There also will be some fun giveaways and prizes.

Baker lives and writes on the shores of Penobscot Bay in Belfast. For the last few years, he and his family — wife Ekco and their children Alex and Ava — have spent the winters in the panhandle of Florida and it was there, three years ago, while writing what eventually became “Slow Boat to Purgatory” that he decided to become a published author. Taking advantage of the changing landscape of publishing, he decided in 2011 to independently publish his first novel.

“Slow Boat to Purgatory” went on to become an Amazon.com bestseller both in the United States and the United Kingdom with more than 10,000 copies in the hands of readers. “The Arimathean” is the sequel, available in print and e-book. It also is available in print at Beyond the Sea in Belfast.

Baker relies on his lifelong love of history and travel for much of his inspiration. “The Slow Boat to Purgatory” series reflects this with its forays into history, myth and legend, traveling across centuries and continents at a pace that keeps the pages turning. Described as a cross between Anne Rice and Dan Brown, the series delves into the paranormal while exploring such themes as honor, salvation, good and evil and the immortality of the soul.

When not writing, Baker can be found actively running The Moorings RV Resort and wearing his chef’s hat at their restaurant, Papa J’s and the Lobster Bar. His website is vernonjbaker.com, and he can be found on Twitter and Facebook.
