Barbara Ann (Blood) Symes

Barbara Ann (Blood) Symes, 82, of Farmingdale, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.

She was born in Morrill, Maine on Sept. 7, 1931, the youngest of five children of Arthur K. Blood and Mabel E. (Wentworth) Blood. She graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast in 1949 and was employed first by the state of Maine and later by the Maine National Guard at Camp Keyes in Augusta for 37 years.

Barbara married Wendell H. Symes in Camden on Sept. 22, 1951. They built their house in Hayford Heights in 1956, and she took great pride in maintaining a beautiful home.

She was predeceased by her husband Wendell in 1971,  her brother Arthur and sister-in-law Alberta Blood, and brothers-in-law Olin Jackson and John Bibber.

She is survived by three sons, David A. Symes and his wife Becky of Pittston, Donald (Ed) W. Symes and his wife Tammy of Farmingdale, and Douglas J. Symes and his wife Emily of Monmouth; and grandchildren, Laura Johnson and husband Josh of Pittston, Karen Rybka and husband Trevor and great-grandson James of Chelsea, Jessica Gray and husband Andrew and great-granddaughter Madison of Farmingdale, Kelley Symes of Winslow, and Tanner and Kaden Symes of Monmouth.

Barbara is also survived by three sisters, Doris Herbert and her husband Howard of Belfast, Florence Bibber of Augusta, and Iva Jackson of Salem, Ore., as well as special cousin Lynn Starvo, niece Roann Blood, and many other extended family members.

Friends and family are invited to visit with the family at Barbara’s home on Sunday, Jan. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. A private burial at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta will follow in the spring. The family would like to thank the staff at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care and Maine General Hospice, especially Ana, for their kindness and care during her illness.
