Belfast — One is headed to the postseason and the other home for the winter, but that did prevent the Belfast and Mount View girls basketball squads from forging a somewhat competitive game — at least for awhile — Thursday night, Feb. 7 to cap the high school regular season.

The host Lions, who are headed to the Eastern Class B playoffs for the first time in years, staved off Waldo County-rival Mount View 57-42 Tuesday night.

Belfast will host a prelim playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in hopes of earning a spot in the regional tournament at the Bangor Auditorium the following weekend.

In the Maine Principals Association Heal Points for Eastern Class B, Belfast (13-5, 89.6914 points) finished sixth, while Mount View (3-15, 6.5123 points) finished 18th. Presque Isle (18-0, 157.4074 points) finished first in the 19-team region. The top 13 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Thus, No. 6 Belfast will host No. 11 Washington Academy of East Machias (8-10, 51.3889 points) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a prelim playoff game. The Lions do not play Washington Academy during the regular season.

On Thursday, in the regular-season finale between the longstanding Waldo County rivals, Belfast led 9-8, 24-15 and 43-25 at the quarter breaks.

Keying the Lions were Lexi Nelligan (20 points, 7 steals, 5 rebounds), Courtney Drinkwater (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), Ashley Littlefield (6 points, 2 rebounds), Katrina Lapham (5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), McKenzie Thibodeau (4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), Mariah Sturgis (4 points), Madison Cummings (point, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) and Brianna Flagg (point, 3 rebounds).

Drinkwater got the Lions off on the right paw with a couple of early first-quarter 3-pointers.

For Mount View, Courtney Morse tallied 12 points; Brooke Tripp, 11; Alexis Morse, six; Jenni Nadeau, four; Janelle Thornley and Megan Elkins, both three; Meri Picard, two; and Kaitlin Leavitt, one.

Belfast netted 13-of-17 free throws (76 percent)) and Mount View 6-of-16 (38 percent).
