Belfast Chess Club Grand Opening
|Oct 07, 2013|
|5:00 PM - 8:00 PM|
The Belfast Chess Club will hold a grand opening Monday, Oct. 7, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bell the Cat. There will be some snacks and refreshments provided.
The two big changes to the club are that the chess time will be open to all ages and that Russell Kahn will post on Bell the Cat facebook page which Mondays he will be there for instruction. (This will also be posted on the dry-erase board at Bell the Cat.) Even if there is no instruction, Mr. Kahn highly recommends that students (and adults) play as much as they can during the three-hour time slot and try to play as many new people as possible and in different age groups. Remember, the next best thing to playing and winning is playing and losing.
The Belfast Chess Club has had a great six years housed at the Belfast Free Library. The staff has been outstanding, working with and alongside the children and parents associated with the chess club. Many Monday or Wednesday evenings would be spent with half the family searching through books and the other children with me learning and playing the game of chess. The biggest need the club had many years ago was a space to play. We will miss the expertise of Jane Thompson in helping organize the weekly play and Steve Norman for his support in having the club at the library for so many years.
