Belfast Free Library to hold annual book sale

Jun 15, 2012

The Friends of the Belfast Free Library will hold this year’s annual book sale beginning Wednesday, June 20, and running through Saturday, June 23. On Wednesday the hours are 4 to 8 p.m. On that day only current Friends members may purchase books at a 10 percent discount. Hours on the following days are: Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Offered for sale this year are books of all types for all ages. Generally, hardcover and quality paperback books will sell for $1, and trade paperbacks will sell for 50 cents. In addition, there will be some audio books, CD’s and DVD’s. Some select books, priced accordingly, will be featured in the lobby.

Founded in 1992, the Friends membership assists the library in maintaining all of its services, and encourages community support of the library through contributions of books, money and volunteer time. The Friends promote the use of the library for the enrichment of life in the Belfast community. New members are always welcome. A single membership is $15, and a family membership is $20.

The primary fundraising efforts of the Friends are: an annual membership drive, the book sale in June, and the Friends Book Sale cart located across from the circulation desk in the library. In addition, the group sponsors seasonal dessert card parties and a yearly bottle drive at the Belfast Transfer Station (this year during the month of July). Funds raised by the Friends go toward the purchase of new books, program materials, multimedia resources and equipment. During the 2011-2012 year, the Friends have supported the library’s 125th anniversary celebration, contributed to the Chess Club, purchased chairs for the children’s room and continued to support the purchase of new DVDs for the library’s collection.

Donations to the sale are welcome. Please call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10 first to determine what items are being accepted for the sale.

Come and get your beach reading for the summer, or your woodstove reading for the winter!
