Belfast hopes to tee up competitive links season
Northport — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Belfast Area High School golf team:
Coach/years coached current team: Chip Lagerbom, 19th year.
Last year's record/playoff information: Shot a four-golfer, 18-hole team stroke total of 387 at the Class B state qualifier, but did not qualify for state competition.
Roster: Seniors Logan Mitchell, Grant Starrett and Peter Brunette; juniors Allen Alley and Josh Adams; sophomores Alex Fritz and Doyle Bailey; and freshman Jessica Clapp.
Known graduation loss: Tim Sticht.
Significant impact players: Fritz and Mitchell.
Team strengths: Returning all but one starter from last year's team.
Team goals: Improve on individual games and match up well against new opponents.
Top league opponents: Camden Hills, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and several new Class A schools.
Outlook: The Lions lost only one golfer to graduation, Sticht, though he is a significant loss as he qualified for the schoolboy state individual championships last year.
However, coach Lagerbom said many of his golfers have been working on their games throughout the summer, which hopefully will translate to success on the links.
“Golfers have been working on their game, especially on the [driving] range and putting green,” the coach said. “We hope to improve each match and be competitive in them all.”
