Belfast man charged after multiple bail violations

Belfast — A Florida man who recently moved to Belfast is back in jail after violating his bail conditions for a previous offense.

Nicholas Aird, 29, was arrested Jan. 11 after calling police to report that his girlfriend attempted to assault him, Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said. However, officers determined Aird had assaulted his girlfriend and booked him at the Waldo County Jail.

Cunningham said it is not uncommon for someone to call police thinking that if they report a crime first it will work out in their favor.

While Aird was being held at the jail, he contacted his girlfriend by phone and was subsequently charged with violating a bail condition, which prohibited him from contacting her, Cunningham said.

On Jan. 14 police were contacted after Aird allegedly went to his girlfriend's residence. Police were unable to locate him at that time, but when they returned on Jan. 15, they found Aird “hiding out,” Cunningham said.

Aird was charged with two additional counts of violating his bail conditions. As of Tuesday, Jan. 22, he was still at the Waldo County Jail.
