Belfast mat athletes 13th at prestigious Spartan tournament

Two-day event becomes one day due to more inclement winter weather

Sanford — While the annual two-day Spartan Wrestling Tournament had to be reduced to one day of intense mat action and saw a few squads, most notably, Camden Hills, unable to attend due to inclement weather and poor road conditions, Belfast student-athletes did participate in the prestigious, talent-laden event and the Lions did quite well for themselves.

BAHS finished 13th among 25 teams, which included Lion "A" and "B" squads. The tourney, which included wrestlers from Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, was won by Marshwood of Eliot.

The team scores were: Marshwood 219.5, Timberlane, N.H. 191, Noble of Berwick 164.5, Cumberland, R.I. 152, North Providence, R.I. 144, Massabesic of Waterboro 142, Mountain Valley of Rumford 119.5, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 82, York 75, Tyngsboro, Mass. 74, Portland 69, Fryeburg Academy 67, Belfast 'A' 63, Sanford 53, Biddeford 39.5, Lisbon of Lisbon Falls 38, Marshwood 'B' 14.5, Belfast 'B' 10, North Smithfield, R.I. 9, Bonny Eagle of Standish 5, Portland Christian 3, Scarborough 3, Thornton Academy of Saco 3, Mountain Valley 'B' 1 and Sanford 'B' no score.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion wrestlers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Austin Merando pinned Soriya Yong, Scar, at 4:00; was pinned by Kevin Morris, Tyngs, at 1:35; and was pinned by Kam Pacaro, Cumb, at 2:26.

113 pounds — Brendan Bruns pinned Brandon Avery, Bidd, at 3:03; was pinned by Caleb Austin, MtVal, at 2:27; pinned Taylor Wood, Scar, at 4:56; and lost to Kyle Sanborn, San, 15-9.

120 pounds — Zachary Sheafe was pinned by Jake Martel, Nob, at 1:29; and was pinned by Dwayne Dyer, Bidd, at 4:35.

126 pounds — Matt Oxton was pinned by J.D. Martin, Lis, at 1:18; and lost by major decision to Jess York, Yor, 9-1.

132 pounds — Brandon Waterman lost to Isaac Whittemore, FoxAca, 4-2; pinned Zane Townsend, BE, at 0:34; pinned Jake Gagne, Bidd, at 2:47; and lost to Shawn McCarron, NorthPro, 8-6.

Dakota Coleman was pinned by Tyler Everett, Mass, at 0:23; and was pinned by Josh Grenier, Nob, at 0:20.

138 pounds — Walker Roberts beat Joe Jerez, NorthPro, 8-5; pinned Dakota Jacques, MountVal, at 1:59; was pinned by Ryan Peters, Timb, at 1:53; lost to Sam Hebert, Marsh, 5-4; and forfeited to Jacques, MountVal. Roberts finished sixth.

145 pounds — Mike McFadden pinned Ryan Buzzell, Frye, at 1:36; was pinned by Shamus McManus, Marsh, at 5:47; beat Jose Negrete, NorthPro, 8-4; beat Logan Martin, Mass, 10-4; was pinned by Zachary Stevens, Lis, at 3:27; and had a double-forfeit with Steve Massi, Cumb. McFadden finished tied for fifth.

152 pounds — Curtis Warren was pinned by Billy Brock, FoxAca, at 6:13 in overtime; and forfeited to Kyla Bragg, San.

160 pounds — John Capella was pinned by Joe Grenier, Nob, at 1:34; beat Logan Brown, BE, 5-0; and was pinned by Todd Francis, FoxAca, at 4:04.

170 pounds — Austin Sprague was pinned by Trevor Walton, Mass, at 5:43; pinned Joseph Barbera, Scar, at 1:31; won by forfeit over David Moore, Lis; and lost to Michael Pendriss, FoxAca, 11-10.

182 pounds — Matt Smith was pinned by Hunter Smith, Nob, at 2:56; pinned Hunter Bradway, BE, at 0:41; and was pinned by Mark Slusher, Yor, at 2:44.

195 pounds — Simon Lacasse pinned Joseph Brown, Scar, at 2:30; was pinned by Sebastian Dziadkiewitz, NorthPro, at 1:57; and lost by forfeit to Mike Hurst, San.

220 pounds — Jacob Harford was pinned by Shawn Grenier, Timb, at 0:43; and was pinned by Evan Oliviera, NorthPro, at 3:41.

285 pounds — Jared Hansen pinned Cain Schriber, Scar, at 1:16; pinned Austin Burnham, Bidd, at 3:38; was pinned by Cody Spicer, Yo, at 3:11; lost to Anthony Izzi, NorthPro, 5-2; and won by forfeit over Jacob Zenga, Nob. Hansen finished fifth.
