Augusta — Belfast and Mount View high school wrestlers more than held their own — with two Lions winning titles and one being the outstanding Class B performer of the meet — during the annual talent-laden Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship tournament Saturday, Jan. 26 at Cony High School.

Lions Berenyi (126 pounds) and Brent Waterman (132) finished first in their respective weight divisions, while Belfast's Peter Kelley (195) and Mount View's Job Mesaric (220) placed second.

Belfast's Walker Roberts (138) and Wyatt Roberts (182), as well as Mount View's Devan Fuller (285), all finished fourth.

Berenyi was the outstanding Class B wrestler of the meet.

Belfast finished third overall and was the second-ranked Class B team behind Camden Hills.

The team scores were: Skowhegan 227.5, Camden Hills 142.5, Belfast 104, Mount Blue of Farmington 96, Gardiner 81, Mount Ararat of Topsham 79, Morse of Bath 77, Oxford Hills of South Paris 75, Cony of Augusta 70, Nokomis of Newport 69, Winslow 56, Erskine Academy of South China 55, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 49.5, Mount View of Thorndike 46, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 34, Brewer 32, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro 32, Brunswick 28, Edward Little of Auburn 12, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 10 and Hampden Academy 3.

The league has awarded separate Class A and Class B championships the last three or four years to bring wrestling in line with other league sports. Thus, Camden Hills and Belfast, often the overall league champion, finished first and second in the Class B portion of the tournament.

Skowhegan, a Class A school, was the overall league champion this year.

Belfast will compete in the Eastern Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 9:30 a.m. at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, while Mount View will participate in the Western Class C championships the same day and time at Bucksport High School.

The Lions should battle Camden Hills for the Eastern Class B crown, while Mount View has a solid shot to make a strong push for the Western C title.
