Belfast, Mount View mat athletes battle in state championshipsLion Kelley secures individual state crown at 195 pounds
Waldo County high school student-athletes more than held their own during the state wrestling championships held Saturday, Feb. 16 at two separate venues.
Belfast finished fourth in the state Class B championship at Fryeburg Academy and Mount View was ninth in the state Class C championships at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft.
The local grapplers brought home one individual state crown, with Lion senior Peter Kelley capturing the 195-pound state Class B title. Area athletes also secured several top-four finishes, including three second places.
Belfast's Brent Waterman (132 pounds) was shooting for his fourth straight state crown but was unable to compete due to injury.
The state championships were to be Feb. 9 at the Augusta Civic Center, with all three classes represented at the event. However, that meet was postponed a week due to the blizzard that hit the state that weekend.
