Belfast pool athletes strong in state meets

By Staff | Feb 20, 2014

Brunswick — Small in numbers but large in talent — and improvement.

That was the scenario for Belfast Area High School boys and girls swimmers during the state Class B championship meets on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 17-18 at Bowdoin College.

The girls meet was Monday and the boys Tuesday. Typically, a state meet will include prelim/qualifying swims in the morning and early afternoon and the finals at night. That happened in this year's girls meet, but not the boys, as that meet held only the timed finals during the day to finish before another winter storm hit the state Tuesday night.

The Mount Desert Island girls and Greely of Cumberland boys won state team titles.

Donna Kelley, the Lion girls coach said, "The girls had good swims and all showed improvement in an event they were swimming. Kaylen [Ottman] broke her own 200 free record and made it back to finals to swim in the 200 and 500 [frees]. The medley relay team and the 400 free relay team also made it back to the evening and improved upon their times from the morning. I was very pleased given our very young girls team. We had two relays return and Kaylen for the evening [final]. Good experience for them."

Bob Winslow, the Lion boys coach said, all the boys did well, with Jackson Winslow the only Belfast swimmer to place among the top 8 in an event. He was sixth in the 500. All the boys in the 500 improved on their times as did the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
