Belfast resident seeks to turn Arizona's political tide
Earlier this year, Arizona Gubernatorial hopeful Fred DuVal recruited Belfast resident and brother David DuVal to run his Fred 2014 campaign. Eight months later, David DuVal reminisces on the call that set the series of events in motion that landed him clear across the country into a very hot climate and an even hotter political environment.
“While some people were setting New Year’s resolutions to lose a few pounds, Fred decided that his was to become Arizona’s next Governor," David said. "His next decision was to call his brother. ‘How about running the campaign?’ he said to me on the phone."
While, it had been four years since a Democrat has held the Governor’s Office in Arizona, with Fred’s list of credentials amde David confident his brother could win, saying “If a Democrat can win in Arizona in 2014, Fred’s the one.”
David, who had been in marketing and advertising agency management for 30 years recognized that Republicans registrations were running substantially ahead of Democrats in the state, meaning it would be a spirited battle. Up for the challenge, he packed up his Belfast home and on Feb. 1, he landed in Phoenix. On April 24, following an exploratory period, the campaign was officially launched — 22 months before the 2014 November election.
“Starting early was a calculated move to give us a strategic advantage, and, so far, it’s worked,” David said. “We harnessed over 1,500 statewide public endorsements — about 150 of those from elected officials — and that before the other side had even formed its first exploratory committee. It also gave us a faster start in raising money.”
Commenting on being away from Maine, David shares that, “Once Maine gets into your blood, it never leaves, which is what brought me back a few years ago. Today, however, my sailboat is in a barn in Northport, my heart is in Penobscot Bay and my Belfast home patiently awaits me. For now, we have an election to win, but when the time comes, I’ll be the first one on the plane. I can’t wait to get back.”
