Belmont — The town of Belmont celebrated its 200th year last weekend and opened the festivities with the dedication of a new veterans memorial at the town office.

Belmont resident and World War II veteran Carmine Pecorelli led the ceremony, which included a prayer first given by President John Adams and listing the names of every Belmont veteran.

The town was also presented with a certificate from the Maine Senate, recognizing Belmont in its bicentennial year.

Belmont veterans from every war since World War II attended the event.

The plaque on the memorial reads:

Dedicated to all Veterans Who Have Served Their Country Honorably and Who Have Helped Preserve the Freedoms That We Enjoy in this Great Country
