Maine Agricultural Trade Show

Tuesday to Thursday, Jan. 8-10, at the Augusta Civic Center. Find out what's going on in the agricultural and forming world, both in Maine as a whole and in Waldo County. Many displays and booths are set up. Thursday is the day that features the maple sugaring industry. The seven-day weather forecast indicates good driving during the entire three-day period. Thursday, the 10th, is likely to be the first time I have been able to attend.

A successful vacation week

So often the school vacation week is interrupted by a major rain storm. This  year the rain came early, on Friday, and while the snow cover was very thin locally to start, there was ample snow cover within a relatively short drive. And Thursday put the frosting on the vacation week, with more due over the weekend and before you get to read this column. Hope you have all had a great holiday season.

A fizzle of sorts

No, the snow did not change to rain and/or mix and get washed away, but the eight inches of wind-packed powder was less than I was anticipating. Much of the Penobscot Bay, Knox and Waldo counties was located in a dry slot much of the afternoon, and the light stuff that was falling did not add up to much. This happens occasionally when a storm overdevelops, and it was readily detectable in the satellite graphics on the Weather Channel. The picnic table out back appears to have deeper snow, but I don't have time to check it out  now. No power outages that I am aware of. A week ago, I had all my pie fillings pretty well prepared and was able to start baking by 8 a.m. in anticipation of the outage of approximately four hours that did happen. We beat it by an hour and a half!
