Belmont votes to move forward with withdrawal process

By Ben Holbrook | Aug 23, 2013

Belmont — Belmont residents chose to move forward with their withdrawal process from Regional School Unit 20 following a vote in the affirmative Thursday, Aug. 22.

Residents voted 36 in favor to 15 against for moving forward with withdrawal, according to results from the Belmont Town Clerk. Belmont, in addition to Belfast, Morrill, Northport, Searsmont and Swanville, attempted to withdraw from the district previously, but fell short of the required votes during a June referendum vote.

The next step for the town is to form a withdrawal committee that includes a member of the petitioner's group, a municipal officer, a member of the RSU 20 Board of Directors and a member of the general public.

The group is charged with creating a plan to withdraw from the district.

Once a plan is created it must be approved by the Department of Education and the RSU 20 Board of Directors.

Belfast also voted to move forward with its withdrawal process following a vote Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Northport is scheduled to hold a vote on restarting its withdrawal process Tuesday, Sept. 17. An informational public hearing will be held Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Edna Drinkwater Elementary School.

The ballot question will also ask residents to approve $30,000 for costs related to the withdrawal effort, according to information posted on the town's website.

Morrill officials said petitions were received, but not in time to schedule a vote during the Sept. 17 budget referendum vote. A date to hold a vote about restarting the withdrawal process has not been proposed at this time, officials said.

Searsmont Town Clerk Kathy Hoey said residents will vote on whether they wish to move forward with the withdrawal process Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the same time residents will vote on the RSU 20 budget.

Swanville has not received any petitions to restart the withdrawal process as of Friday, Aug. 23, according to town officials.

Gene,

You know our boys are already missed and anxiously observed through FaceBook.  Back in the day, according to my husband, a Belmont boy born & raised, the Belmont Bobcats were some kind of legend--maybe when Belmont had a school?  I think they later became "Crow Bowl"... But we won't go into that. But the twins would have definitely been Bobcats!

While I have observed a few bobcats in our fair town in my 40 years, I was unaware of its status as town mascot.  Now that my nephews have headed off to college perhaps we will get a little tranqullity back in our town. LOL.
