Belfast — The First Annual Gregory N. Bowen Memorial Motorcycle Ride drew a crowd of more than 200 motorcyclists who turned out to raise money for Waldo County families battling cancer.

This year’s ride marks the third year of the event — formerly called Bowenfest — after it initially started to support Bowen, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. After Bowen died, the organizers decided to continue the ride in support of someone in Waldo County suffering from cancer.

“It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors,” Sandy Merrifield, one of the committee members for the event, said. “Everyone is very, very supportive.”

Merrifield said the event draws riders from all over the state and the money raised from this year’s ride will be split up among multiple Waldo County families.
