Black Raiders down Lions in season openerClark scores two rushing touchdowns for Lions
Winslow — Lining up against against a team that competed in the state championship game 10 months ago — let alone on that team's home field — is hardly the way a squad wants to start the high school football season.
But that is exactly the assignment Belfast was given, and accepted, Friday night, Sept. 6, as the Lions traveled to Winslow to face the Black Raiders to kick off the gridiron season.
The Lions got out to an early lead and kept things close through the first three quarters, but the Black Raiders received a pair of touchdown runs from Zach Guptill in the fourth stanza as Winslow pulled away with a 28-12 win.
Guptill ended the game with three touchdowns and rushed for 110 yards, while Dylan Hapworth rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries and quarterback Bobby Chenard added a touchdown on a quarterback keeper for Winslow.
Both of Belfast's touchdowns came from Greg Clark, who had a 5-yard run on the game's opening drive and added a 24-yard score in the third quarter.
Winslow lost to Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 22-20 in last year's state Class C championship game.
