Body of missing man recovered from Megunticook
Camden — Maine Game Warden divers recovered the body of James B. Wescott just after 8:34 p.m. — about 12 hours after he was last seen — from Megunticook Lake.
James B. Wescott, 71, of Belfast is the father of Olympic snowboarder Seth Wescott, according to the Warden Service. According to game wardens, it is presumed Wescott suffered a medical event and then fell into the water. Maine Game Warden divers and side-scan sonar were used to locate Wescott’s body in 60 feet of water.
Wescott was rowing with his friend Jeff Foltz of Camden, each in his own single scull. Foltz told emergency responders at the scene he was about 100 yards from Wescott when he saw Wescott had stopped rowing, but had not lost an oar. “He let go of his oars and he grabbed his chest,” Foltz said.
He called out to Wescott “Hang on, I'm coming.” As he was turning his boat and rowing to the other scull, he saw that Wescott had gotten free of the scull's shoes and had draped himself over his boat. “I thought it was just going to be a matter of towing him to shore,” said Foltz.
But by the time he got to the other boat, “I couldn't see him.” Foltz said. He added that something must have gone wrong, because Wescott was “too good a sculler to just fall over. He didn't hit anything. He just stopped rowing.”
Lincolnville Fire Department and the Warden Service brought boats to search for the missing man. Northeast Mobile Health Services, Camden Police and Camden Fire Department also responded to the scene. The Lake Warden was involved as well, and private boaters also aided in the search.
