Boys enjoy focus, brightness of state championship spotlightNorth Atlantic Gymnastics Academy hosts meet in late March
Rockport — Seven North Atlantic Gymnastics Academy boys gymnasts competed in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Maine State Championships on Sunday, March 26, an event hosted by NAGA at the Penobscot Bay YMCA.
The meet was for those in Levels 4-9, while NAGA gymnasts competed in Levels 5 and 6.
Gyms represented were Andy Valley of Lewiston, GymNation of Kennebunk, Western Maine Dance and Gymnastics of Portland, NAGA, Maine Academy of Gymnastics of Westbrook and Dudziak’s School of Gymnastics of Biddeford.
For NAGA gymnasts, who finished second, include Oscar Barnes of Rockland, Wylie Hixson of Camden, Mason Contakos of Rockport, Noah Frederick of Lincolnville and Joshua Pratt of Camden.
Barnes placed second all-around (54.00), first on floor exercise (9.7), second on high bar (8.6) and parallel bars (8.6) and third on pommel horse (9.0) and vault (8.9).
Hixson placed fourth all-around (51.3), second on rings (8.6) and third on floor (8.6).
Contakos placed fifth all-around (50.4), first on vault (9.3) and fourth on floor (8.2) and high bar (8.6).
Frederick placed seventh all-around (48.8), fourth on parallel bars (6.6) and fifth on vault (8.9).
Pratt placed sixth all-around, second on pommel horse (10.3) and third on vault (9.1).
NAGA has two gymasts who compete at Level 6. A group needs three scores to make a team so those gymnasts competed individually.
Elliot Condon of Lincolnville, with the 10-11-year-olds, placed sixth all-around (50.8). He also placed fifth on pommel horse (9.4) and vault (8.6).
Noah Thackeray of Camden, in the 12-and-older group, placed seventh all-around. He also was sixth on rings (8.2) and vault (8.5).
