Burnham — A 2-year-old died Oct. 16 after he was unintentionally run over by his grandfather.

Maine State Police said the child, Raymond Rayeski III, died after his grandfather, 54-year-old Raymond Rayeski Sr., backed over him with a tractor. The incident occurred at 150 Pond Road.

The elder Rayeski was watching his grandson while the two were outside working near a woodpile on the property, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said. At one point, both Rayeskis were on the tractor but the child eventually got off to play, McCausland said.

Rayeski Sr. was using the tractor to clean up debris and dump it a short distance away. It appears, McCausland said, that the child ran after the tractor and his grandfather did not see him as he was backing up.

The grandfather drove his grandson to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield where the child died. Investigators determined the death was an accident.
