Burnham, Palermo weigh in on local ballot issues

Voters in Burnham and Palermo were asked to vote on a handful of local issues, which included the sale of former school property and changing the cost-sharing method for the school district.

Burnham

Voters were asked to approve or reject a proposal to sell the former Burnham Village School facility, as well as to approve or reject a proposal to convert the facility into a Town Office and Community Center:

"Shall the former Burnham Village School facility be sold, as is, in the same manner as tax-acquired property for no less than the amount of $50,000 (fifty-thousand dollars)?"

"Shall the former Burnham Village School facility be sold, as is, in the same manner as tax-acquired property for no less than the amount of $150,000 (one hundred-fifty thousand dollars)?"

"Shall the former Burnham Village School facility become the Town Office and Community Center?"

Burnham residents approved selling the former Burnham Village School facility for no less than $50,000 by a vote of 248 in favor to 232 against. However, voters rejected the proposal to sell the former facility for no less than $150,000 by a vote of 129 in favor to 299 against.

The final ballot question asking to convert the facility into the Town Hall and Community Center passed by a vote of 281 in favor to 240 against.

Palermo

Residents were asked to approve or reject a proposal to amend the Regional School Unit 12 reorganization plan to adjust the cost-sharing method outlined.

Specifically, the ballot asked: "Shall the method of sharing costs in the Regional School Unit 12 be changed from the method set forth in paragraph 13-B of the RSU 12 reorganization plan previously approved by the voters at referendum – the “Plan” – to the revised cost-sharing method set forth in the proposed revision to paragraph 13-B of the plan, which was approved by the RSU School Board at a meeting on Sept. 13, 2012, in accordance with the plan?"

Palermo residents approved changing the cost-sharing method set forth in the reorganization plan by a vote of 388 to 325.
