Portland — Deadline is Friday, March 24, for the Crime Wave Flash Fiction Contest sponsored by Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance in advance of its annual spring Maine Crime Wave conference, which is set for Saturday, April 22, on the University of Southern Maine campus.
The competition is open to all Maine residents, who are invited to submit a no-more-than-500-word crime story beginning with a line contributed by bestselling thriller author and Camden resident Tess Gerritsen, to wit:
“He stepped inside, shook the snow from his jacket, and realized that everyone in the room was staring at him.”
First prize is publication in the Maine Sunday Telegram, plus a full scholarship to attend the 2017 Maine Crime Wave; the second place author will have his or her name announced in the Maine Sunday Telegram and get a 50 percent scholarship to attend 2017 Maine Crime Wave; and the third place gets name announced and a 25 percent scholarship.
Submissions are only accepted online via Submittable; those without a Submittable account will be required to register, which is free. Employees of MWPA and MaineToday Media, and their families, are not eligible. For full submission information, visit mainewriters.org.
