Conservation groups host weekend hikes

Feb 12, 2013

Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition are hosting a winter exploration of the Meadow Brook Preserve in conjunction with the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, a statewide event sponsored by the Maine Outdoor Coalition.

The hike will explore the preserve — located in Swanville — on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ellen Skoczenski, Membership Coordinator for the Land Trust and Cloe Chunn of the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition will lead the excursion via snowshoe or cross country ski

Participants should be prepared for a challenging excursion — there are no established trails and footing may be uneven. Extra layers and water are recommended. Please call ahead for directions to the meeting location.

Also on Saturday, Feb. 16, the Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance is hosting a free, 2-mile family- and beginner-friendly hike — at an easy pace — at the Bog Brook trailhead in Montville. Whether you rarely hike in winter or often bring the kids, this level trail provides a chance to enjoy the outdoors. Snowshoes will be available — sizes range from child to adult — courtesy of the Journey to Health Program.

Bring food, beverage, clothing and equipment appropriate for the weather. In case of hazardous weather, the hike will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, at the same time and place. This event is co-sponsored with the Waldo County Journey to Health Program. Snowshoes are available on a first come first served basis. If there isn't sufficient snow, this event will be a hike.
