Cooking Classes Starting in January!
Camden, ME — We are very happy to announce the launch of a cooking class series co-sponsored by Camden Whole Health. Beginning in January, six local whole foods educators will beginning teaching twice-monthly cooking classes at High Mountain Hall, in Camden. These classes are intended to support and inspire home cooks to have more confidence preparing meals in a variety of health-food genres, including raw food, Ayurvedic, veganism, grass-fed meat and healthy Greek cuisine. All menus will be gluten free.
Midcoast Maine is emerging as a destination for people who are in need of healing. Holistic and complementary healers here include naturopathy, massage, acupuncture, jin shin jyutsu, shamanic work, counseling, many forms of energy and body work and nutritional healing. Healing through food is one of the most fundamental way a body can heal. The decades of combined experience of the cooking instructors is a tremendous resource to our community. Each of the six instructors became a student of natural healing in order to heal themselves or to heal a loved one.
Susan Hamill, for example, began exploring macrobiotics 35 years ago when her then-husband was diagnosed with cancer. (He is still alive, and cancer free.) She has been teaching cooking classes and supporting cancer patients for over 30 years. Anna Sideris, manager of High Mountain Hall, also began exploring healthy food when her family was touched by cancer. Both Kim DePaolo and Holly Noonan discovered the healing power of food through battling their own health challenges. Heather Hynd was drawn to a vegetarian lifestyle 40 years ago and has been been a constant student of healing and gardening ever since. Robin MacCready’s entree into the healing power of food has been through wildfood foraging and creating homemade fermented foods for her family such as kefir, breads and ancestral recipes.
All six whole foods educators are thrilled to be collaborating on a program that allows them to share what they know with the community. The first class– “Whole Foods Cooking on a Budget”– is to be held on Monday, January 7th, from 6pm-8pm.
Each of the twelve classes is limited to ten participants. Classes are offered on a sliding scale from $40 to $60 and each class will have one spot designated as a work-study position. Registration is available through Camden Whole Health’s website.
