Court finds man guilty of assault, terrorizing
A Thorndike man accused of strangling his girlfriend unconscious and assaulting a police officer in September 2016 was found guilty this week on four counts by a Waldo County court.
Andrew Smith, 37, was found guilty of aggravated assault, domestic violence terrorizing, obstructing report of a crime and violating condition of release, according to court records.
On Sept. 15, 2016, Sgt. James Greeley and Deputy Andrew Mulligan of Waldo County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence report in Thorndike. Police learned the victim was allegedly assaulted by Smith the night before. When the victim arrived home, Smith was “highly agitated,” police said in a news release, and allegedly punched and strangled the victim until she lost consciousness.
He also dragged her by her hair, threatened to kill her and took her phone to prevent her from calling 911, police said. The victim suffered injuries that were consistent with her description of the incident, according to police.
While he was being taken to Waldo County Correctional Center, Smith unfastened his seat belt and reached through a partition to assault Mulligan, police said. Smith also repeatedly threatened to kill Mulligan while being taken to jail.
On the aggravated assault charge, he was sentenced to Maine Department of Corrections for three years, with all but one year suspended and probation for three years. His sentence also includes nine months at Waldo County Jail, for the domestic violence terrorizing charge and six months each at the same facility on the other two charges.
