Deadline nears for Playwrights’ Competition
Islesboro — Deadline for the Children’s Theater Program’s 2017 Playwrights’ Competition is Sunday, April 30. The Children’s Theater Program was established in 2012 and produces three summer shows of one-acts, monologues and poetry of original work performed by a coed ensemble of preteen and teen actors.
The Third Annual Playwrights' Competition is open to both amateur and professional playwrights. Short one-act children’s plays are scheduled to be performed by actors age 6 to 18 at Islesboro's UpIsland Church Stage during July and August (July 14, July 28 and Aug. 11).
There are three categories: Amateur Youth Playwrights (younger than age 18); Amateur Adult Playwrights (18 and older); and Professional Adult Playwrights. All scripts are to be the original work of the submitting playwright, 5 to 10 minutes’ running time, written in good taste, suitable for family audiences and for a co-ed cast of two to five preteen or teen actors.
Work can include adaptation of uncopywrited prose, poetry and drama found in the public domain; or material otherwise released for adaptation by its author. Those whose plays are selected are invited to direct their plays on Islesboro during rehearsal week, with room and board provided.
The Playwrights-in-Residence program, led by CTP's founding director, Toby Martin, provides room and board on the site of a 19th-century island farmhouse, with home-cooked farm-to-table meals. Applicants must be at least 18 and submit a piece of their writing — a short play, prose or poetry. Those selected will be encouraged to write plays for the performances being held in July and August. Tuition is $300, or $150 with a part-time farm work co-op exchange.
