District 5 Cal Ripken tourneys in swing of things

U10 tournament in Waterville, U12 in Skowhegan

With both Waldo County Cal Ripken League regular seasons now in the books, both leagues have chosen two all-star teams and are participating in the District 5 tournaments.

The Belfast-Northport-Swanville Cal Ripken League has fielded a team and will compete as Belfast, while the Midcoast Cal Ripken League also has fielded a team and will compete as Midcoast in both the U10 and U12 double-elimination tournaments, respectively.

The U10 double-elimination tournament at Fran Purnell Field in Waterville began June 20 and will conclude on Sunday, June 24, while the U12 double-elimination tournament at Carl Wright Baseball Complex in Skowhegan began on June 22 and also will conclude Sunday, June 24.

U10

The tournament consists of teams from Farfield, Madison, Messalonskee, Skowhegan, Waterville, Winslow, Midcoast and Belfast.

Midcoast lost 10-0 in four innings to Messalonskee in the opening game of the tournament June 20 and will next play on Saturday, June 23 at 9:30 a.m. Belfast will face Fairfield June 21.

The championship game, should Midcoast or Belfast advance to the finals, will be on Sunday, June 24 at 4:30 p.m., with the "if" game set for on Monday, June 25 at 5 p.m.

The following is the roster, including alternates, for both Belfast and Midcoast for the tournament:

Belfast U10 — Dakota Payson, Max Lewis, Sam Spectre, Timmy Smith, Jack Hansen, Carter Nichols, Caleb Hall-Arnett, Jason Bartlett, Jacob Mills-Lightner, Christian Pilliteri, Ryder Wagenknecht and Ethan Porter. Team alternates are Kaci Faulkingham and Zepharin Leppanen. The team is managed by Nate Spectre and coached by Kurt Payson.

Midcoast U10 — Tommy Walker, Lucas Walker, Anthony Sanborn, Spencer Nickerson, Brady Moulton, Amethyst Merithew, Silas Mehuren, Isaiah McHugh, Joe Lepore, Christopher Kelley, Noah Jacobs, Thurston Illingworth and Anferney Glidden. The team is coached by Don Nickerson, Ed Lepore and Charles Barfield.

U12

The tournament consists of teams from Fairfield, Madison, Messalonskee, Skowhegan, Waterville, Winslow, Midcoast and Belfast.

Midcoast will face Waterville, while Belfast will face Fairfield, in a pair of contests to be played on Friday, June 22 at 5:15 p.m. Midcoast's game will be played on Field 1, while Belfast's game will be played on Field 3. Should both teams win, they would face off on Saturday, June 23 at 11:45 p.m. on Field 3.

The championship game, should Midcoast or Belfast advance to the finals, will be on Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m., with the "if" game set for Monday, June 25 at 5 p.m.

Belfast U12 — Stan Sturgis, Tyler Bartlett, Zack Scheafe, Sam Goguen, Nathaniel Johnson, Konnor Harford, Nick LaRochelle, Ricky Smith, Zack Dyer, Skylar Perkins, Wilder Magruder and Matt Howard. Team alternate is Luke Lightner. The team is managed by Jason Wilcox and coached by Jason Perkins.

Midcoast U10 — Dylan Abbott, Vincent Bonarrigo, Declan Brinn, Aaron Fuller, Seth Johnson, Eli Jollisse, Jesse Kulbe, Josh Minor, Landon Nichols, Aiden Pike, James Robbins, Christian Sukeforth, Anthony Tibbetts, Quinn Tibbetts and Derrick Tyler. The team is coached by Jason Fuller, Rick Tyler, John Tibbetts and Mike Abbott.
