Double bill at Unity College Center
Unity — Arborea and Christopher Paul Stelling will perform Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
Arborea is husband-and-wife duo of Buck and Shanti Curran. Since forming in 2005, the avant-folk duo has released five albums and performed throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. Their performances include live sessions on the BBC, NPR, WNYC and WXPN.
Arborea's fourth album, 2011’s “Red Planet,” received widespread critical praise including Rolling Stone's Best Under-the-Radar Albums of 2011 list; an Editors Top Pick nod in Guitar Player Magazine; Top Vinyl Pick in the September 2011 issue of Mojo Magazine; and Portland Phoenix's Top Ten Albums of 2011 list. The duo’s latest album, “Fortress of the Sun,” was released in April on the New York City-based label ESP-Disk, coinciding with the label's 50th anniversary.
After releasing his debut album "Songs of Praise and Scorn" in February 2012, Stelling began touring relentlessly. Singing his songs with a pure uninhibited delivery, he has become known for the intensity and passion put into his live performances. Owing as much to the bards and troubadours of times long since past as to his contemporaries, Stelling's ever-developing commitment to his craft is obvious.
Stelling's second album, "False Cities," was released in May 21 on the heels of his first European tour. The album's gothic folk mix of howling fingerpicked stomps and crooning laments have seem him touring farther and harder than ever, even as he preps songs for his yet-to-be-titled third record.
