Driver faces manslaughter charge in connection with Thorndike crash
Thorndike — Police say a Unity man who turned himself in at the Waldo County Sheriff's Office Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 18, is facing several charges including manslaughter stemming from a one-car crash in Thorndike July 4.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office issued Wednesday afternoon, Alvaro Soares, 27, of Unity, was arrested on charges of manslaughter, operating under the influence involving death, reckless conduct, aggravated driving to endanger and criminal speeding.
Soares was released on $50,000 unsecured bail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 31, at Waldo County Superior Court in Belfast.
The charges are a result of a fatal traffic accident that occurred in Thorndike July 4 in which 23-year-old Oscar Tizon Brito, of Providence, R.I., died. The crash left Soares' sister, Kelley Soares, 22, of Cranston, R.I., with serious injuries.
At the time of the crash, alcohol and excessive speed were considered factors in the investigation. Although police have not released how fast the vehicle was traveling before it struck a utility pole, previous reports indicated that Soares was driving well in excess of the posted speed limit of 30 mph.
