Belfast — The Belfast girls basketball team played another competitive game Friday night, Jan. 25, this time against Gardiner, a tough Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B opponent.
And, despite working overtime, the host Lions fell short.
The game was filled with dramatic moments which, ultimately, led to the visiting Tigers pulling out 57-49 overtime victory.
Gardiner led 47-44 in the final seconds of regulation when Lion Courtney Drinkwater drilled a 3-point shot at the buzzer to knot the game 47-47 and force the extra time.
The game was one of surges with Gardiner leading 14-10 after the first quarter and Belfast rallying for a 26-23 edge at halftime. The Tigers regained a 37-28 cushion after three quarters before the game was knotted 47-47 at the end of regulation thanks to Drinkwater's long shot.
The visitors then outscored the Lions 10-2 during the extra time to secure the victory.
The Lions again received a bundle of strong performances, including from Lexi Nelligan (16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots), Drinkwater (9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 blocks), Mariah Sturgis, (8 points, 9 rebounds, assist, steal), Katrina Lapham (7 points, 3 rebounds), Ashley Littlefield (6 points, 6 rebounds, block), McKenzie Thibodeau (2 points, assist, steal), Breann Cummings (point, steal) and Madison Cummings (2 rebounds, 6 assists, steal).
For Gardiner, Kylee Granholm and Ally Day both dumped in 16 points, while Kelly Macomber and Kelsey Moody each added seven; Rachel Quirion, five; Taylor Banister, four; and Camden Cone, two.
The Lions netted 15-of-26 free throws (58 percent) and the Tigers 17-of-29 (59 percent).
In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Belfast (9-4, 47.0062 points) is fifth, while Presque Isle (14-0, 92.6173 points) is first in the 19-team region. The top 13 squads qualify for the playoffs.
